When you eat cheese before bedtime

I had a nightmare while on vacation.

A roadside attraction - a recreated pioneer boomtown - that lures families, and then conspires to separate children from their parents.

Distractions abound. A ribboned bonnet, the blacksmith’s anvil, the clomp of boots along the boardwalk, a spinning weather vane, a face in the window of an empty church.

You tell them to stay close. They promise they will.

You blink

They’re gone
